A new quench-and-temper line at US Steel's Fairfield Tubular plant in Alabama is aimed squarely at relieving a domestic OCTG bottleneck for Permian, Eagle Ford, Haynesville, and Appalachia operators — a $475M bet that reflects how tight domestic tubular supply has been.

That tightness sits alongside a US rig count that's fallen roughly a third from its 2022 peak even as Lower 48 output hits record highs on longer laterals and completion efficiency — fewer rigs doing more work, which changes what equipment gets prioritized and how far out it's quoted. The weekly Baker Hughes rig count, published continuously since 1944, remains the standard reference point for near-term demand across this equipment.
