Generator set components
Engines, alternators, controls and governors, cooling and exhaust, and the fuel and starting systems that decide whether a standby set actually starts.
What actually fails on a standby generator, and what governs where one can be installed?
A generator set is an assembly with three independent failure domains: the prime mover, the electrical machine, and everything that has to work before either of them does. Standby installations fail far more often on fuel condition, batteries and controls than on the engine itself, because those are the parts that sit idle between exercises. Emissions tier on the engine governs where a set may be installed and how many hours it may run, which is frequently a stricter constraint than its power rating.
